VOLUNTEER WORK

Brazos Valley Fashion Week | 3 hours

Brazos Valley Fashion Week was constructed to fill the need of local charities in the Brazos Valley area. In 2016, the first annual Fashion Week was held at Central Park in College Station. This three day long event showcased local high school designers as well as former contestants from the TV show Project Runway. Local makeup artists and hairstylists were also showcased during the event. Funds raised from the 2016 event went towards the renovation of Central Park. Plans to make central park a "fun for all playground" accessible to children of all needs is the vision for the renovations to take place over the next couple of years.
My duties as a volunteer for this event consisted of  two shifts where I was a greeter and ticketmaster. I was able to interact with members of our community who had donated to this wonderful cause as well as observe how a city-ran fundraising event is implemented. I believe this event displayed a terrific example of local business and youth involvement in implementing events.

Barksgiving | 4 hours

Barksgiving was the major event implementation project for the fall of 2016 RPTS 321 class. It was hosted at Wolf Pen Creek and had many live acts, family fun activities, and adoption businesses present. For this event, I worked at the kids activity and crafts table. I really enjoyed interacting with the kids and seeing all of the unique twists each child put into their crafts. I think this was a great sunday family event where all members of the family can participate, event the ones with tails and fur!

Emily Pulley at Concerts on Carter Creek | 4 hours

Emily Pulley, a local of bryan-College Station, delighted the attendees of the second concert in the 34th season for Concerts on Carter Creek. Her song selections titled "For the Birds," highlighted selections revolving around songbirds and fittingly for the Thanksgiving season, a couple of turkey songs. The concert was followed by light snacks and punch.

I served as a greater prior to the event and passed out programs and song lyric sheets. During the mingling time following the event, I helped serve punch. I really enjoyed volunteering for this event, but also being able to enjoy Emily's beautiful song selections. Hearing a classically trained soprano singer was truly a delight. I also greatly enjoyed visiting with the many community members present at the event.

Daddy Daughter Dance | 4 hours

The Daddy Daughter Dance is hosted by the Children's Museum of Brazos Valley. The event was held at the HIlton on University in College Station. The event provides a fun event for fathers to attend with their daughters. It also provides a source  of income for the children's museum as they do not have a single major benefactor. The event had fun activities including a silent auction, wand making, cookie decorating, and photo opportunities with princesses.

During the event, I was stationed at the silent auction table. I provided information to the guests on the rules for the silent auction and any questions regarding the prizes. Following the event, I helped with distribution of the prizes and clean up. I greatly enjoyed visiting with the dads and daughters as they came by to look at the prizes.

Dining in the Dark | 7.5 hours

Dining in the Dark is an annual dinner event hosted by the Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the BVCIL through an event that helps to educate individuals attending on the daily lives of those with visual impairments. The event consists of a dinner being served entirely in the dark.

I assisted with the set-up and teardown of a rope grid that was laid on the floor during the event. The rope grid was used by the servers during the event to help guide them through the rows of the banquet. During the event, I sold raffle tickets for two grand prizes: a custom made David Gardner's necklace and a Benjamin Knox painting.  This event allowed me to really expand on my personable skills and ability to approach strangers while working an event.

The Fashion Event | 13.5 hours

The Fashion Event is an annual event hosted by various businesses in the Bryan-College Station are. The purpose of the event is to raise money for a charity while also highlighting local talents in the beauty and modeling industry. This year, the proceeds went to Mercy Project, an organization that works to liberate child slaves laboring on Lake Volta in Ghana, Africa.

I volunteered all three nights of the event. Each night, my tasks varied slightly. Overall, I assisted in crowd control, clean up during and after the event, watching of merchant tents during the event, and assisting in lining up the younger children models for thier show. This was by far one of the more high class events I volunteered at. It really helped to open my eyes to how elegant a non profit event can be. This event also highlighted how well a community can come together. Several local beauty salons, schools, and talent agencies came together to make this all possible.

I assisted with the set-up and teardown of the event. During the event, I sold t-shirts, butterfly wings, and superhero capes for participants to purchase and wear throughout the event. This event was just a really fun one to see all of the families and children involved. I really enjoyed all of the small fun additives, such as sa bubble machine on the stage. It was a very joyful event.

Wine and Roses Festival | 4 hours

The annual Wine and Roses Festival is held by Messina Hof to celebrate the budding of the vines and the blooming of the roses. The event includes fun activities such as grape stomping competitions, wine tasting, a 5K run, a chocolate and wine pairing class, and a steak dinner.

During the event, I worked in the wine and chocolate pairing class. These classes were 30 minutes long with six classes throughout the day. While the classes were taking place, we would prepare the taste cups and chocolate truffles for the next class. In between the classes, we reset the whole room for the next 100 guests. This event really helped me to understand the importance of tien management and being prepared. I also noticed the only exchange of money took place at the ticket tent up front. Tickets were used as currency throughout the whole event. I thought this was very efficient for an alcohol focused event.
